RX-310: Introduction to Fire Effects

Agency and Group Training

RX-310 is available for agencies and organizations looking to provide fire effects training to their staff. This option combines the self-paced online course with four live, instructor-led sessions. Participants complete the online lessons independently and meet as a group to discuss course concepts, ask questions, and apply their learning to operational situations.

Course Delivery

Self-Paced Online Learning

Participants receive access to the complete RX-310 online course and work through the lessons on their own schedule.

Three Live Online Sessions

Three instructor-led sessions are scheduled with the agency throughout the course. These sessions provide opportunities to review key concepts, discuss field applications, and work through questions.

Flexible Scheduling

Live sessions are scheduled in consultation with the agency to accommodate staff availability and operational requirements.

Group Enrolment and Pricing

Group enrolment and live instruction are arranged directly with CR Professional. Pricing is based on the number of participants and instructional requirements.

Live Instruction: Three Applied Sessions

Week 1: Determining Fire Effects for Values, Mitigation, and Ecological Thresholds

Learn how to identify values that may benefit from or be damaged by fire. We'll examine ecological thresholds, cultural values, wildlife habitat, soils, riparian areas, smoke, and operational constraints. Participants will work through a burn scenario to identify desired and unacceptable fire effects, mitigation measures, and monitoring indicators.

Week 2: Writing Desired Fire Effects in Prescriptions and Burn Plans

Move beyond broad objectives such as "improve habitat" or "reduce wildfire risk." Learn how to describe observable and measurable fire effects, including shrub top-kill, surface fuel consumption, crown scorch, tree retention, and substrate severity. Participants will practice translating management objectives into clear fire effects that can guide burn planning, operations, and monitoring.

Week 3: Applying Fire to Meet Desired Fire Effects on Burn Day

Connect burn conditions, fire behaviour, ignition patterns, and ignition sequence to the effects you want on the ground. We'll explore how to influence fire intensity, residence time, fuel consumption, scorch, and burn patchiness. Participants will work through a burn-day scenario, and identify when to continue, adjust, or pause ignition if the desired effects are not being achieved.
