RX-310 Blended Live and Online

RX-310 Introduction to Fire Effects is a self-paced online course that helps fire practitioners, land managers, ecologists, biologists, foresters, agrologists, and resource specialists understand how fire affects vegetation, soils, wildlife habitat, watersheds, cultural values, smoke, and post-fire recovery.

This live cohort includes access to the full RX-310 online course plus four live online sessions focused on applying fire effects knowledge to prescribed fire planning, burn plans, monitoring, and burn day decision-making.

This cohort is designed for people who want to move beyond course completion and into practical application. We will connect fire effects concepts to values, mitigation, ecological thresholds, desired fire effects, ignition strategies, fire behaviour, monitoring, and adaptive management.

Participants will receive access to the online course from January 4 to February 28 and will attend four live sessions on Monday mornings from 0830 to 1030 Pacific Time.

Live session topics

Week 1 January 11: Determining fire effects for values, mitigation, and ecological thresholds We will look at how to identify values, determine acceptable and unacceptable fire effects, and connect fire effects to ecological thresholds, mitigation, and monitoring.

Week 2 January 18: Writing desired fire effects in prescriptions and burn plans We will translate broad objectives into clear, observable desired fire effects that can be used in prescriptions, burn plans, monitoring plans, and operational briefings.

Week 3 January 25: Applying fire to meet desired fire effects on burn day We will connect burn conditions, fire behaviour, ignition patterns, ignition sequence, and timing to the fire effects we are trying to create.

Week 4 February 1: Fire effects in practice: case studies, guest speakers, and applied discussion This final session will bring the pieces together through short guest presentations, applied examples, and group discussion. Participants will hear how practitioners are applying fire effects knowledge in prescribed fire, cultural fire, monitoring, and land management.

Guest 1: Rick Andersen with United Nations Savanna Fire Initiative and USFS International Programs presenting on "Fire Effects in Tropical Forests and Savannas - A Case Study from Belize/Central America."

Guest 2: TBD

Guest 3: TBD
